WOW! What a change!

February 25, 2010

Well it’s only been an hour or two since we’ve crawled out of bed, and what a change we’re seeing in the Swag Bucks home page.  The Swag Bucks crew promised big changes and they’ve delivered already!

The first thing you notice when you open your browser this morning is a staggering change in your Swag Bucks total.  Before you start dreaming of all the big ticket items you’re going to buy in the Swag Store read about the re-valueing of Swag Bucks.

1 Equals 10

1equals10

Every Swag Buck is now worth ten Swag Bucks.  What?!?  In the same way that one dollar equals ten dimes Swag Bucks has changed the way we earn our rewards.  Now, you’ll get 10 Swag Bucks as a search reward, or 20 Swag Bucks, or maybe 16 or 18.  This allows Swag Bucks to reward us with intermediate denominations.  Winning 16 Swag Bucks sounds better and makes more sense than winning 1.6 Swag Bucks.

At first this may seem like a sneaky way of rewarding us with partial Swag Bucks, but when you think about it, 99% of the Swag Bucks we used to get each day were 1 SB denominations.  Only time will tell how prevailent the new denominations are, but it looks like we may be earning our Swag Buck a little faster.

Please post your winnings today… let us know how many Swag Bucks you’re winning and how often.

Good luck!

Update #1

new20Our fist win of the day is a crisp new 20 SB.  Equivalent to an old denomination 2 SB.  We’re pretty happy with this :) Keep posting your wins in the comments… Good luck!

Update #2

new20Our second win of the day is another crisp new 20 SB.  So far that makes 4 old school Swag Bucks.  Not bad for a morning :) Keep posting your wins in the comments… Good luck!

My first score was also a 20, but in my mind I keep seeing the numbers and thinking of the Old School Italian Lira. It’s a hyper-inflated number :)

So now a $5 Amazon card is 450 Swagbucks. What’s the difference? It’s like inflation in a Banana Republic.

Not really… The Amazon cards do not cost any more than they did under the old system, relatively speaking. 1 old SB is now 10, so 45 old SBs are now 450. If what the initial wins are suggesting is accurate, you’ll actually be able to cash in your Swag Bucks for an Amazon card sooner.

      Keep posting your wins everyone.

Not really, it will still take just as long to earn 450SB as it did to earn 45SB. Actually because this is inflation it will actually take longer. Lets look at a then and now numbers. Lets say they gave out, on average, the following in an hour:

        1SB – 1000
        2SB – 750
        3SB – 400
        4SB – 100
        5SB – 10
        TOTAL – 4150SB for 2260 awards

Now they are going to inflate these by an order of magnitude and add additional amounts so it might look like this:

        10SB – 1000
        15SB – 500
        20SB – 300
        25SB – 230
        30SB – 110
        35SB – 75
        40SB – 35
        45SB – 9
        50SB – 1
        TOTAL – 37030SB for 2260 awards

As you can see they can award the same amount of wins and give out less SB (in this case 447SB) by adding more denominations and adjusting their distribution curve. So, we get more variety of bills, neat new graphics, a bigger balance in our accounts, and less free stuff. That is just how inflation works. Don’t get me wrong, I am not jumping ship, I still like SBs, but this is not good for us, it is good for them.

Very interesting example Phil. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but these numbers are of course speculation. You may be completely correct and the cynic in me suspects that this change comes out a positive for Swag Bucks.

Only time will tell if our SB accounts gain or lose buying power. Thanks for the insight.

You are exactly right WLSB. These are completely made up and speculation. This just tends to be how these things work. To be honest, I would love to be wrong. I also expect the changes for a single individual will be minor enough that we probably won’t notice. I know that my wins are more often then not only 1SB anyway. :-)

My first search I got 30! Of course, this is probably just a one day thing, I don’t expect we’ll usually be seeing 20 and 30 spots for searches.

Okay, I just found swagbucks last Friday & liked it right away, but I was only getting a swagbuck or two a day. This morning I have already gotten a 30 spot & a 20 spot! Wow. I don’t expect this every day, but I do expect to get more in a day. Or at least that’s how I read it on TSG’s blog. I’m excited!!!

I haven’t won any swagbucks as of yet… :( And I noticed that even with this “1 turns to 10″ deal, it really doesn’t help! The item I wanted for 380 SB (in the past) is now worth 3800 SB…. so in reality it hasn’t done me any good!….. Yet….. ;)

On the contrary the new point system is a major disappointment. It will now probably take longer to win prizes. Their blog says “You’ll also be winning 2 and 5 and 7… ” which is equivalent to winning .2, .5, and .7 swagbucks on the old point system. So depending on how often you win 10+ swagbucks, It could potentially take twice as long (or longer) to win prizes since the number of points needed to win a prize hasn’t changed (scale-wise) – all they did was take the current amount of points needed for a prize and multiplied it by 10. Lame.

We’ve read that as well Daniel. In the same paragraph Swag Bucks states that we should see prizes more often. Traditionally we’ve all been getting rewarded a maximum of 3 or 4 times per day. Things could even out or even prove better if the frequency of wins increases. Again, only time will tell.

According to the blog one of the new changes is that they’ve “had to move to a new system where ONLY logged-in users will get Swag Bucks.”

It may have to do with where you are searching from. I have found that I do much better searching from home with my static IP then from work. I am guessing that your IP works into their algorithm as to when to award. With many people at my work on the SB and the same network I rarely win, ever, when searching on the work network. Can’t prove this, but I have collected a lot of circumstantial evidence.

OK, I’m not into math probability, but here’s my take on this. I believe it is a marketing scheme. Now that Swagbucks is 2 years old and has a huge following, is it possible that they need to slow down? Have they found that advertising and funding cannot keep up with the distribution of Swagbucks? Wow, so suddenly a single swagbuck is worth TEN now, and everybody is excited! They are trying to give the impression that they are amping up the rewards, but wait and see. Those awards in the new increments of 10 are going to come a lot slower, but they hope we don’t notice because it’s a lot more than than old reward. (NOT!)

Swag Bucks has said that we will see more rewards per day, but only time will tell.
